An Unfortunate Incident

on Thursday, February 24, 2011
It all started at the field where the Mommas usually take me for a little run and to train my recall. Around that area is a pack of dogs who we assume belong to the mechanics that have a shop opposite the field. These dogs are left to run about outside, completely untrained without any supervision.

Like most dogs, they're all bark but they've never tried to come close to us. Yesterday however, we saw one of them barking after a guy on a bicycle. He kept looking back, and wasn't paying attention so he skidded on a particularly sandy bit of the road. After he fell, the dog sort of scuffed at him and walked away!

The girl didn't seem like a bad sort. She came to the field and started staring at me, scoffing at my recalls and sits. When Momma-1 wasn't paying attention I zipped off after her just to show her I had a mind of my own too. She didn't think too much of that, and hide herself in the tall grasses. Momma-1 and I didn't give her much thought after that, but a few minutes later this very unpleasant man came brandishing 2 large planks of wood and shouting threatening words at the her! He even started throwing beer bottles at the poor girl, because the best way to get a dog to come to you is by brandishing large weapons and throwing glass bottles at it, naturally.

This is a picture that Momma-1 hastily took of the man. Sorry for the obviously horrid quality, she only had her phone with her and she was quite terrified that he would spot her trying to take the picture!

Momma-1 was horrified, but she didn't know what to do. She had half a mind to give him a good telling off but he wasn't alone and she was unarmed. Of course, she forgot that she was totting me about! I would've given him a good piece of my teeth if he tried to harm her.

Fortunately for the girl, she quickly ran off and the bumbling arsehole never got to her. The man walked back to his friends and began laughing about it. It was most uncomfortable and frightening so Momma-1 cut training short and quickly brought me home. We were on the look out for her on the way back, we didn't see her anywhere. Hopefully she's safe and the brute didn't think to harm her in any way.

It's really sad that the girl is paying for what is essentially his fault (assuming he's the one who owns her). It's very frustrating that the laws here don't protect the weak and voiceless. We wish we could report his ass all the way to jail! A rather unpleasant end to what would otherwise be an uneventful day.

If you were in our shoes, what would you have done?

It's very rare to see that kind of thing here, and so I am not sure what I would do. I would probably be in shock. The worst ownership I've seen is people letting their dogs run all over the road off leash. I usually yell at people like that and tell them to put their dog on a lead.

oh how awful. It so sad that there still people out there who is so horrible to dogs. Unfortunately I don't thin there much you could really do. You has to put yours and your Momma's safety first and a scary man with wood and bottles might to anything! I hope that dog be ok.

I'm not sure there is a lot you could have done. Maybe in time the dog will wander off and find another place to live that's better for her.

Unfortunately, that's the kind of mentality that most Malaysian pet owners have. It's sad but true & sadly, thgere isn't much you can do to help that dog. You won't be able to get him fined or jailed either because remember, our country do not care about dogs. Nobody will help.

I'm glad to know the dog ran away before he could hurt her & I'm glad you guys quickly left after that incident.

Perhaps you should find another place to do the training. Far away from horrible people.

Anyway, thanks for dropping by my blog & leaving me a comment. Looking forward to reading other posts from you.

Oh, Summer! What a terrible story!

Jeannie sees a lot of poor treatment of animals(up to this point neglect, no acts of abuse) in the neighborhood where she works. She finds these sick, needy dogs who are constantly moving to track food and avoid predators and wants to pull over to offer help every single time. But, if the dog attacks her (lots of them are afraid of people and she knows about fear aggression), the animal will definitely be put down. If the dog comes to her willingly, she worries any diseases it carries may be transmitted to me, etc. She also worries about getting in trouble with work for being very late to important meetings, etc. The list of potentially dangerous scenarios seem to go on and on in her mind.

For Momma-1, acknowledging the potential danger this situation posed to her (and to you) is what stopped her from physically/vocally intervening. But, she remained there to monitor the situation. Perhaps, if you and Momma-1 weren't there, it might have been a worse display of abuse. I think that maintaining your presence and being a watchful eye is exactly what Jeannie would have done.

Your well-being is just as precious as that of this poor dog you described and you just have to protect yourself first. Sorry you had to experience that terrible situation -- it's rotten and I think everyone reading this can empathize.

OOOOhhh - tricky..but you don't know if nasty human with stick would be nasty to you..don't take the risk. You are more powerful studying details/ descriptions etc and reporting it as scary incident. Must have been very upsetting..oh dear.

Oh - that's terrible! I have to say - even though we live in countries which have much better animal welfare laws and generally better education of pet owners, we do still sometimes see people doing really stupid, even cruel things to their dogs. Hsin-Yi often wants to say something but sometimes she has to protect herself (and me!) coz these same kind of people often don't care about the law much either - even to humans! - and they won't hesitate to do something bad to you as revenge for interfering. Especially as I am very recognisable in my neighbourhoods - my humans are always worried they might do something to harm me (like leave poisoned meat in our garden) as revenge! I know that sounds a bit extreme but we have met some nasty people who have got so angry when my humans just pointed the dog laws out to them nicely...

...so sadly, sometimes it is better not to get involved or at least, if you want to, get their details secretly and report them to an animal welfare organisation if you can (I know Malaysia doesn't have many but WSPA? An int'l organisation?) and let the authorities do the disciplining, rather than you getting involved directly.

I know it seems mean but I think sometimes you just can't help everyone and you do have to protect yourself first. Maybe help through other ways...

I have NO idea. what a nasty incident. I don't know what I would have done. I don't even know if I'd have the balls to ask innocently "hey is that your dog?" (sort of curious if they were just harrassing a stray or if it was truly his dog). if it was his dog, i dont' think they'd go after it with a plank... i'd bet they were random harrassers... or abusers.

sorry you had to see that.
